The MTV Association was started in Seattle, Washington U.S.A. during 2005, as the industry was beginning to show signs of being shorthanded. Today you can pick up any trade magazine and read of a marine industry becoming very concerned with training, recruiting, and retaining workers.
As the MTV develop membership and a central website we hope to become a hub of interest and benefit to sailors in the towing industry. This association can be molded to fit its member’s needs. We can make suggestions, changes, and vote through the Internet. Master and Mates of Towing. Join them NOW to advocate for the tugboat captain.
The Master of Towing Vessels Association represents USCG licensed masters and mates with the towing endorsement on their license. Obtaining this endorsement has become increasingly difficult in recent years.
The pool of new recruits into the industry has become almost non-existent and the training requirements have become nearly overwhelming. Also many of the existing masters will retire from towing in the next few years. In doing so they will take with them a valuable history of towing knowledge that cannot be learned in the classroom or through the USCG T.O.A.R. (Towing Officer’s Assessment Record) program 46 CFR 10.304(h).
If you hold a Towing Endorsement you already know what it’s worth. The MTV Association is committed to:
Make the occupation more appealing to mariners currently in the industry
Share information on the current environment of the towing industry, as well as its licensing, regulation and manning issues
Retain and preserve the traditional practices and skills of the towboat industry, and glean knowledge from those captains soon retiring with 30 or 40 years at sea
Make the T.O.A.R. Training program more appealing to new recruits for the industry

Tugs and tankers, cranes and container ships, Golden Gate dawns, Pacific sunsets, and Coastside fogs are all part of tugboat Captain Jan Tiura's workday world, a world she turns to magic through the lens of her digital camera.
As a photographer, her work has appeared in WorkBoat Magazine, Professional Mariner Magazine, Sail Magazine, Bicycling Magazine, Mountain Gazette, and local newspapers, and on exhibit in the Potomac Visitors Center in Oakland, California, the World Trade Club in San Francisco, California, and most recently, at the Cafe Museo at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Maria Brooks currently lives in Oakland, California, not far from the docks. This one-time high school teacher has produced, written and directed historical documentaries appearing on PBS stations around the country.
Her programs often focus on maritime themes. These documentaries capture characters in conflict, responding to events beyond their control. The filmmaker is particularly drawn to true-life stories unknown to most TV audiences. Her films depict individuals driven by inner turmoil to face challenges – but they don’t always succeed. She has given her audiences a myriad of tales from one of a haunted black sea captain in the Arctic posing as white - to stories of bedraggled sailors on a doomed convoy on the Murmansk Run in WWII. There’s even a tale of an old Eskimo woman fighting to save her reindeer herd from marauding interlopers.

The Women's Maritime Association is an informational and support network of seafaring women and men. Established in 1980, WMA is based in Seattle, with members from all over the United States, and several other countries. Our membership includes women who work on ferries, tugs, fishing vessels, tankers, deep sea merchant ships, yachts and delivery vessels, as well as women who are seeking employment in the maritime and fishing industries, or who are students in maritime training programs.
WMA's purpose is to promote communication among women and men in maritime industries. Our newsletter provides a forum for exchanging information on employment, health and safety, training, and the achievements of our members.
